Boys & Girls Age Groups

Boys & Girls JV / Varsity Divisions

To ensure fair and competitive play, all teams must register in the appropriate division based on player grade level and/or age. Below are the definitions for Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity divisions:

Boys & Girls JV Division:

  • Players must be rising 9th or 10th graders (typically 14–16 years old).
  • Generally, for athletes who have not yet played varsity-level basketball.
  • Intended for:
    • High school freshman and sophomore teams
    • Club teams made up of underclassmen
    • Players still developing for varsity-level play

Grade Eligibility: Must be entering 9th or 10th grade in the upcoming school year

Age Cap: Must be 16 years old or younger as of August 31 of the current AAU season

Boys & Girls Varsity Division:

  • Open to rising 11th and 12th graders (typically 16–18 years old)
  • For teams with players who have played or are prepared to compete at the varsity high school level

Grade Eligibility: Must be entering 11th or 12th grade in the upcoming school year

Age Cap: Must be 18 years old or younger as of August 31 of the current AAU season

 Important Notes:

  • Players may not play down a division (e.g., varsity players cannot play JV)
  • Teams must compete in the division that best matches their players’ oldest age/grade
  • Birth certificates and grade documentation may be required to verify eligibility
  • Mixed-grade teams must register in the division of their oldest player
